What is Zeolite?

Zeolite is a complex mineral which forms in the contact of volcanic lava and water. This process can take thousands or even millions of years; scientists estimate that the first zeolite minerals formed over 300 million years ago.The first recorded use of zeolites can be traced back to ancient Rome, where they were used to purify water. Later, in the 18th century, zeolites were discovered in the volcanic rocks of Iceland and were named "zeolite" (from the Greek words for "boiling stones") because of their ability to produce steam when heated.
